*1 機織り職人の恋人がなんの理由があって悪魔につかまっているのかは不明。あるいは機織り仕事の単調さをまぎらわすために歌われたのかもしれない。「九十九と九十」は、延々と織り進める作業をあらわすのかもしれない。

text & tune: 原型は1450年頃にまでさかのぼる、非常に古い英国民謡

謎々が八つしかないのだが、九つ目はどこに行ったのだろうか。

チャイルドバラッド1番Riddles Wisely Expounded《解き明かされた謎々(賢女問答)》の異形の一つ。


原型となったラテン語+中世英語の混合詩Inter Diabolus Et Virgo《悪魔とおとめ》では、悪魔が出す謎がわからなかったおとめはキリストに祈って知恵を授かり、悪魔を撃退するという物語になっている。

後に、身分ある騎士の謎かけを解き明かして結婚するという結末のものと、原型と同じく悪魔を撃退するという結末のものに分岐した。
